MPs accuse govt of keeping royal property details under wraps
Kathmandu, August 7:
Members of Parliament (MPs) today accused the government of not providing details of property belonging to the King and the royal families, though parliamentary committees had directed the concerned ministries time and again to come up with details of the royal property.
“The ministries concerned have not been paying heed to the directives,” Member of Parliament (MP), Subash Karmacharya, told the House. The Public Account Committee and Natural Resources Committee had directed the government to furnish details of the plots of land acquired by the King and members of the royal family and their income and movable property. “The ministries are not following the directives,” he added.
Demanding that taxes be imposed on royal property, Karmacharya also called for the imposition of ceiling on land holdings of the royal family. Laws do not allow the royal family to acquire acquire 34,000 ropanis of land, he said.
“Why have members of the civil society been demanding the dissolution of the House and why have they not been asking the Maoists to disarm?” MP Kamal Prakash Sunuwar quipped.
The two MPs were speaking during the special hour.
Participating in a discussion on budget allocation under the Ministry of Law, Justice and parliamentary Affairs, MP Umakanta Chaudhary urged the government to immediately table bills for amending laws and making them compatible with the House declaration.
He also demanded that action be taken against corrupt judicial officials. MP Tanka Prasad Sharma Kandel called on the government to maintain law and order.
MPs Bhakta Bahadur Balayar, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, Nara Bahadur Hamal and Ananda Prasad Pokhrel demanded that officials not be given discretionary powers as the latter lead to misuse of power.
