KATHMANDU, JANUARY 19
The MV Dugar Group has planted more than 100,000 saplings of various species across different parts of the country over the past five years as part of its long-term commitment to environmental conservation, according to a press release.
The large-scale tree plantation drive was launched on the occasion of the 75th birth anniversary of the Group's Chairman, Motilal Dugar, five years ago, following his advice and vision to protect nature and improve environmental conditions in Nepal. The initiative has been fully funded by the Group.
Under the campaign, saplings have been planted in community forests located in municipalities of Solukhumbu, Ramechhap and Dolakha districts, where the Group's hydropower projects are operational. Plantation activities have also been carried out at 42 branches of the Group's automobile division stretching from Mechi in the east to Mahakali in the far west, as well as in schools, temples and other public places.
According to the press release, the plantation programme focused not only on planting saplings but also on their proper care and protection. The Group has been regularly weeding, watering and nurturing the plants to ensure their survival. Of the saplings planted so far, around 65,000 have successfully grown.
The saplings include a wide range of species such as timur, rudraksha, amla, lapsi, pear, orange, avocado, lakuri, paiyu, sirish, kimbu, okhar, sallo, kapur, mango, guava, dhupi, bel, jamun, kathar, sandalwood, pomegranate, neem, lemon, tejpat, bamboo, along with various flowering plants.
The Group stated that the initiative was inspired by Chairman Dugar's deep concern about the deteriorating environment, particularly in Kathmandu Valley. A nature lover and social worker, Dugar has consistently emphasised that a healthy environment is essential for public health and national well-being.
The press release further stated that, subject to the availability of land from forest offices, the Group has set a target to plant and protect 500,000 saplings in a planned manner within the next five years. In line with this goal, at least 100,000 saplings are planned to be planted and protected this year alone.
The MV Dugar Group expressed confidence that its plantation campaign would contribute to the government's efforts to improve environmental conditions and increase green cover across the country. the tree plantation initiative reflects the Group's broader philosophy of balancing industrial growth with social and environmental responsibility. Chairman Dugar, who recently marked his 80th birthday, has consistently encouraged initiatives that promote health, education and environmental protection. Emphasising that environmental degradation poses serious risks to public health and natural beauty, he has urged collective efforts to safeguard nature for future generations.
The Group believes that sustained plantation and protection of trees will not only enhance greenery but also support biodiversity, improve air quality and contribute meaningfully to Nepal's long-term environmental sustainability goals. The Group, which has been active in sectors including automobiles, agriculture, hydropower, construction, banking and insurance, has also been contributing to Nepal's energy sector by generating 161 megawatts of electricity from hydropower projects in Solukhumbu and Ramechhap, with additional projects under construction in Dolakha.
