KATHMANDU, MAY 15

A team of climbers today carried out essential maintenance on the world's highest weather station at Bishop Rock (8810m) when they stood atop Mt Everest this morning.

According to Jiban Ghimire, Managing Director at Shangri-La Nepal Treks, under the guidance of climate scientist Baker Perry from Appalachian State University, four Sherpa climbers scaled Mt Everest at 7:00am after they successfully fixed the Bishop Rock weather station.

The team led by Tenzing Gaylzen Sherpa along with Ngawang Tenjing Sherpa, Pasang Sona Sherpa and Ila Norbu Sherpa successfully carried out essential maintenance of the world's highest weather station, Ghimire said.

Climate scientist Baker and renowned IFMGA guide Dawa Yangzum Sherpa instructed the team from South Col, he added.

Likewise, Phutashi Sherpa and Kanchha Nuru Sherpa have been bringing down the old station which remained dysfunctional at Balcony area.

This season, the NatGeo expedition locally managed by Shangri-La Nepal treks successfully carried out maintenance on all five weather stations installed in the Everest region.

Five automatic weather stations were installed during the Perpetual Planet Extreme expedition on Mt Everest organised by the National Geographic Society. Weather stations were installed at Bishop Rock (8,810m), South Col (7,945 m), Camp II (6,464 m), Everest Base Camp (5,315 m) and Phortse (3,810 m).

The team spent over a month in the Everest region to complete maintenance work.

The team leader Tenzing Gyalzen has already been awarded with the Guinness World Record certificate for leading the Sherpa team in the 2022 expedition. He has been involved in the NatGeo expedition on Everest since 2019.

Dawa Yangzum is also the first woman International mountain guide from South Asia.

According to Ghimire, Tom Matthews has been keeping the team abreast of the weather.
