Degradation of Chure range has caused the water level to deplete

KATHMANDU, JULY

The Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress has decided to hold its Mahasamiti meeting from November 27 to 29 in Kathmandu.

This meeting will discuss all the agenda that the NC had earlier decided to discuss in the party's policy convention. NC General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma read out CWC decisions at the end of the CWC meeting today.

The party has urged the government to bring those involved in the recent gold smuggling incident to book.

The ruling party urged the government to ensure unhindered supply of fertilisers and provide compensation to farmers who lost their cattle due to lumpy skin disease. Stating that farmers were able to cultivate only one-third of the arable land this year, Sharma said drought could create food crisis this year.

The party said that desertification caused by degradation of Chure range had caused depletion of ground water in Madhes and the government should find long-term solution to the problem. The NC urged the government to declare Madhes a drought-hit region and provide people appropriate relief.

The ruling party urged the government to bring down bank loan interest. The NC drew the government's attention to the need to provide relief to street vendors who were displaced by the local levels' restrictive policies.

Stating that enactment of citizenship law, albeit after a long delay, was a good achievement which would help children of citizens by birth, children of single mothers and non-resident Nepalis get economic, social and cultural rights, and enable them to contribute to Nepal's development, Sharma urged the government to frame new citizenship regulations soon so that the new citizenship law could be implemented fully.

The NC also urged the government to pass the Truth and Reconciliation Commission bill immediately.

Stating that people had not been able to reap the benefits of federalism fully due to lack of umbrella laws, the NC urged the government to pass federal civil service, police bill and education bill after holding discussions with stakeholders.

The party said although the Nepali Congress succeeded in changing the political course, it had failed to act immediately after the results of provincial and parliamentary elections were announced as it needed to ensure that its partnership in the coalition government facilitated people-friendly policies and better service delivery.

The NC CWC decided to mobilise its elected representatives to ensure better service delivery, spur development, ensure good governance and control corruption. Good governance is NC's first priority. Good governance and corruption cannot go hand in hand, Sharma said.

The NC urged the government to address 15 concerns to ensure good governance. The NC wants the government to end people's woes, particularly the hassles people face at offices that issue important documents such as passport, driving licence and national identity card.

The NC CWC adopted the political report submitted by leader Gopalman Shrestha. It decided to terminate the membership of those cadres who, during any kind of sit-ins or protests, indulged in physical attack or smeared soot on anybody.
