KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 9
The ruling Nepali Congress has completed preparation for inaugurating its 14th National Convention in the capital tomorrow. More than 4,700 representatives from across the country will take part in the convention that will elect the party's new leadership, including 13 office bearers, for the next five years.
The new president will nominate the party's treasurer from among the central working committee. Earlier, the NC had only eight office bearers, but this time the party added assistant general secretaries, said Chief Secretary of NC Headquarters Krishna Prasad Poudel.
NC's national convention will elect the president, two vice-presidents, two general secretaries, and eight assistant general secretaries who will represent eight ethnic clusters.
The convention will end on December 14.
Incumbent President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that he would contest for the party presidency for the second time.
Incumbent Vice-president Bimalendra Nidhi, who was in the Deuba camp in the past, has announced that he will also contest for the top post.
In the rival camp led by senior leader Ramchandra Paduel, there are four aspirants for the top post - Paudel himself, Shashank Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, and Shekhar Koirala. However, Paudel and Shashank Koirala have said that they would withdraw from the race if either Singh or Shekhar Koirala withdraws from the race in order to present a common candidate from their camp.
As of today, Singh and Shekhar Koirala are determined to contest for the party president's post.
Gagan Kumar Thapa, meanwhile, has announced his candidacy for general secretary.
Addressing a party gathering here today, Krishna Sitaula said he would present his views on Sunday when leaders would file their nominations.
He, however, said that he would work with the spirit of maintaining party unity and promoting cordiality among party leaders.
