Gradual drop in daily reported numbers in last 72 hours

KATHMANDU, MAY 16

Nepal on Sunday registered 145 fatalities due to Covid-19 and 7,316 fresh cases, taking the death toll to 5,001 and nationwide total infection count to 455,020, the Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, antigen tests confirmed 52 positive cases in the past 24 hours. As such, total infections from both RT-PCR and antigen tests added up to 7,368.

The capital city recorded 1,881 infections, Lalitpur 436 cases, and Bhaktapur 292 cases today, taking the valley's total 24-hour figure to 2,609.

Both the infections and deaths had been rising sharply after Nepal logged Covid-19 cases in four digits on April 18 after seeing a decline in daily cases for months. However, the numbers in the last few days have been dropping with the infected people getting discharged in thousands.

According to the health ministry, 19,883 total tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, of which 19,539 were PCR tests while 344 were antigen tests. With this, a total of 2,771,020 PCR tests have been carried out in Nepal till date.

Likewise, 6,648 people who were earlier infected with the virus have been discharged in the past 24 hours as per the latest data provided by the health ministry.

As of today, 339,756 individuals have recovered from the novel coronavirus infection. The recovery rate from the disease stands at 74.7 per cent.

Nepal's active Covid-19 case count currently stands at 110,263.

Currently, there are 701 individuals in various quarantine facilities across Nepal.

On Saturday, Nepal's coronavirus case count reached 447,704 with 8,046 newly confirmed cases.

Globally, over 163 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus while 3.3 million people have lost their lives to the disease.

Likewise, over 141 million people have recovered while more than 18 million cases are still active.
