New communications related laws to be made: Communications Minister Baskota

POKHARA: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota on Sunday said that the government is working to make new communications related laws.

Addressing a programme organised to honour former President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Dharmendra Jha with 'Dayashankar Palikhe Memorial National Journalism Award, 2074' in Kaski, Minister Baskota said that laws include an advertisement to provide to small-scale media.

The award was established by freedom fighter, Daya Shanker Palikhe's family and run by Federation of Nepali Journalists, Kaski.

Work is ongoing on the classification of community and commercial radios and establishment of the media council, Minister Baskota said.

Suggesting that media should be critical, he said the government would regulate social networking sites to stop its misuse.

On the occasion, former President of FNJ, Jha, was honoured with Rs 33,333, and letter of felicitation.

The honoured personality Jha said that the society would regulate the journalism, saying questions have been raised on various issues including the relevance of journalism.

Similarly, Minister for Physical Infrastructure of the provincial government, Ram Sharan Basnet, expressed the view that the role of journalism sector would be crucial in the journey of country's propriety.
