KATHMANDU: The US Nepali Climbers Association Inc welcomed the newly elected executive members for the 2025 -2027 term.
Amidst a programme in New York today, the new executive committee under the leadership of renowned climber Jangbu Sherpa officially took charge of the USNCA board to lead the organisation.
"We extend our best wishes to the new team as they embark on their journey to continue the mission of the organization," the election committee said, adding that their leadership will be instrumental in carrying forward our shared vision, enhancing community engagement, and furthering our initiatives for environmental conservation and sustainable mountaineering practices.
The panel also extends its heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing executive members of the 2022-2024 team led by Passang Nima Sherpa for their unwavering dedication, hard work, and outstanding community service.
The past committee led by Passang Nima made it possible to honor Nepal's rich mountaineering legacy, as the US Nepali Association has helped to pass a resolution for the celebration of the Everest Day on May 29 every year.
"This day marks the historic first ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953 and will serve as a platform to recognize the achievements of Nepali climbers, promote mountaineering culture, and advocate for climate action in the Himalayas," it recounted. Additionally, the immediate past committee also worked towards officially naming a street "Tenzing Norgay Way" in honor of the legendary Nepali mountaineering pioneer Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.
The new USNCA leadership team includes: Jangbu Sherpa (Sankhuwasabha) as President, Nima Gayljen Sherpa (Chauri Kharka, Solukhumbu) as First Vice-President, Lakpa Geljen Sherpa (Tapting, Solukhumbu) as Second Vice-President, Ang Dawa Sherpa (Loding, Solukhumbu) as General Secretary, Sarmila Thapa Magar (Samakhusi, Kathmandu) as Secretary, Domi Sherpa (Gorakhani, Solukhumbu) as Treasurer, and Dawa Ongchu Sherpa (Kurima, Solukhumbu) as Co-Treasurer.
The board members include Kaji Sherpa (A) (Khotang, Sungdel), Kaji Sherpa (B) (Gorakhani, Solukhumbu), Dawa Jangbu Sherpa (Thame, Solukhumbu), Pasang T. Sherpa (Kharikhola, Solukhumbu), Mingmar Tshering Sherpa (Solukhumbu), Kancha Sherpa (Nunthala, Solukhumbu) and Passang Nima Sherpa (immediate past president).
President Jangbu Sherpa said that the new team is committed to advancing initiatives that promote climbing, environmental sustainability, and a sense of community. Jangbu from Silichong-1 Sankhuwasabha, is an IFMGA certified guide and a three-time Mt Everest summiteer. Jangbu also climbed K2 (1 time), Cho Oyu (3 times), Ama Dablam (9 times) and Kyajo Ri (1 time). Jangbu also made the first ascent of Gorkarpu (6,889m) and winter ascent of Langshisha Ri (6,427m). Jangbu has already served as the General Secretary of the USNCA.
"Under Jangbu's leadership, the association remains committed to its goal of bringing together climbers, outdoor enthusiasts, and environmental advocates to work towards a sustainable future," Passang Nima said.
