KATHMANDU, JANUARY 7

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the agitating parties to resolve the issues arising from the Sarlahi incident through talks and consultations.

The NHRC is calling for a solution to the ongoing disputes that emerged after the demise of Jay Shanker Shah during a clash between demonstrators and security personnel. Locals were protesting for the upgrading of a primary health center in Barahathawa Municipality-6.

It is reported that the police resorted to blank firing and lobbed tear gas shells to control the situation, as demonstrators threw stones at the residential building of Barahathawa Municipality Mayor Kalpana Katuwal and the municipality office. The NHRC stated that its Madhes Province Office in Janakpur is actively monitoring the incident.

In a press statement, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel emphasized the need for a fair and independent investigation into the incident. The NHRC called for legal actions against the perpetrators and urged the government to ensure appropriate compensation for the deceased's family and treatment for the injured individuals.

Furthermore, the NHRC appealed to the government to ensure law and order and create an environment to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future."
