KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal has condemned the use of force by security personnel within the premises of Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) where Dr Govinda KC has been staging a fast-unto-death for the past 20 days.

Issuing a press release today, NHRC stated that its serious attention has been drawn towards today's incident at the Academy in Jumla where three doctors, one police personnel, along with students and nurses were injured during a clash between supporters of Dr KC and security personnel.

The statement further reads that NHRC is monitoring the incident. In the course of monitoring, it has been revealed that the clash ensued after police baton charged the protesters who were obstructing the team — including the Chief Minister of Karnali Province Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, Law Minister Naresh Bhandari and sercurity personnel — from airlifting Dr KC back to Kathmandu against his will.

In the clash, three doctors and a police personnel have been seriously injured, hospital equipment and building have suffered damages, and patients receiving treatment at the hospital have been terror-stricken.

The Commission requests concerned parties to provision free and effective treatment of the injured, and find out solution to this problem through talks, as such forceful and violent acts violated human rights.

Meanwhile, Nepal Medical Association, also through a press release, has condemned the government's decision to bring Dr KC back to Kathmandu from Jumla without his consent, which violated basic human rights. Likewise, they have expressed sorrow towards the unfortunate events that unfolded in Jumla today, where force was used inside hospital premises which led to many people being injured.
