Kathmandu, July 1:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is all set to persuade the authorities concerned to amend the provisions provided in the nation’s human trafficking laws despite the absence of a parliament. The need of the hour is to amend the trafficking provisions, for which the commission is willing to play a major role, said NHRC member Sudip Pathak.
He said so at a programme on ‘Reviewing legal provisions on curbing human trafficking’ organised by NHRC today. The commission plans to hold discussions and brain-storming sessions with various NGOs involved in the field on the issue, he said. Around 12,000 Nepalis
are trafficked every month, said experts, who pointed out the need to analyse the region’s legal provisions on human trafficking. Lawyer Bhimarjun Acharya said that the trafficking issues should not be lim-ited to women as children, too, are victims of such social evils. He added that the country’s legal provisions on human trafficking are inadequate and there is a need to amend them.
