Calls for relief to victims' families and peaceful resolution of ongoing crisis

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 15

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has appealed to all stakeholders to act with restraint and prioritize human rights, rule of law, and democratic values as Nepal transitions under a new government.

In a statement issued on Monday, the commission urged authorities to ensure post-mortem examinations, dignified funerals, and relief for families of those killed during the recent Gen Z protests. It called on political actors and citizens to move forward peacefully, respect others' rights while expressing opinions, and avoid any speech that could incite violence.

The NHRC further requested that demands be presented through democratic and lawful processes and that obstacles to the public's enjoyment of fundamental rights be swiftly removed. It also pressed for strict control of black-market activities and artificial shortages, smooth supply of essential goods and services, and facilitation of public mobility.

Highlighting damage caused by arson and vandalism during the demonstrations, the commission urged the collection of detailed loss assessments and immediate focus on physical reconstruction and service restoration. Civil society and all institutions, it said, must fulfill their responsibilities to help normalize the situation.
