KATHMANDU, JANUARY 9
The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has assured that the country has the capacity to monitor and manage human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a respiratory virus, in Nepal. This response comes after concerns were raised following reports in the media and on social networks about the virus's spread in China.
In a statement, Dr. Prakash Kumar Budhathoki, spokesperson for the Ministry, emphasized that hMPV poses a low risk of severe illness. "Serious complications are rare, and infections primarily affect those with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly," Dr. Budhathoki noted.
The Ministry urged people to follow standard health safety measures to prevent respiratory infections, including wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene, and keeping distance from sick individuals. Citizens experiencing symptoms are advised to seek medical consultation or call the Ministry's health desk at 1115 for guidance.
Health authorities, hospitals, and laboratories are stepping up surveillance and preparedness to address any potential cases of hMPV.
The Ministry also reminded the public that respiratory infections typically surge during winter, making preventive actions critical. "It is important to remain cautious but not alarmed," Dr. Budhathoki added, encouraging everyone to stay informed and practice recommended precautions.
