KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 14

Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) Social Club Oman have submitted a memorandum to the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Embassy of Nepal in Muscat, expressing serious concern over growing irregularities and exploitation in the foreign employment sector.

In a press statement, the NRN Social Club said it had submitted the memorandum on behalf of migrant workers, stating that despite government-mandated fee ceilings, workers are frequently compelled to pay two to three times the prescribed amounts, significantly increasing their vulnerability-particularly in the Middle East. It further noted that some Nepalis have reached the region even on tourist visas after paying as much as Rs 300,000.

Club President Suresh Khadka said the concerns were raised during a recent ILO meeting and reiterated at a programme held at the Nepal Embassy last Friday, where immediate reforms were urged to ensure foreign employment is safe, dignified, and well-regulated.

The memorandum calls for equal access and opportunities for women in foreign employment, reforms to labour permit renewal provisions, a review of existing tourist visa regulations, and changes to mandatory re-orientation requirements for returning migrant workers.

It also urges diplomatic initiatives to support Nepalis imprisoned abroad, the provision of free legal assistance for migrant workers facing legal challenges, stricter action against crimes related to foreign employment, and a review of service charges levied by Nepali diplomatic missions.

The ILO and the Embassy of Nepal in Muscat have responded positively, committing to forward the concerns raised to the relevant authorities for further action, the statement reads.
