Avalanche on Everest

KATHMANDU: An avalanche that is feared to have caused casualties occurred atop Mount Everest on Wednesday. However, there were no details of the damage caused, said a mountaineering expert. “An avalanche occurred on Camp I at 5 am but we are yet to receive further details concerning casualties and damages,” he said. — HNS

Hydel project hums

DIPAYAL: The Kailash Khola micro hydel project, Achham, which had become inoperational following a Maoist attacked it on September 18, 2003, has started generating power. The 40-KW project had started generating power in 1995. Although two machines, each having a capacity of 20 kilowatts, were installed, only one is operational at present. — HNS

BHAIRAHWA: A meeting of the Gautam Buddha Birthday Preparation Committee has decided to mark the 2549 birthday of Gautam Buddha and the Lumbini Day by organising various programmes from May 21 to 23, a member-secretary of the Lumbini Development Trust (LDT), Gobinda Chitrakar, said. The meeting was held on Wednesday. Two committees — 251-member main birthday committee and 33-member preparation committee have been formed for the purpose. — HNS
