CoAS in Lucknow
NEW DELHI: Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Rookmangud Katawal on Monday reached Lucknow of Uttar Pradesh in connection to a visit to the Gurkha Regiment there. On Sunday General Katawal had participated in the platinum jubilee celebrations of the establishment of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun. Katawal and his entourage are scheduled to leave for New Delhi on Tuesday evening, the Nepali embassy said. — HNS
Man shot dead
BIRATNAGAR: Cadres of the Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha-Jwala Singh on Sunday night shot dead one Prem Raj Thapa in Biratnagar-6. JTMM Morang in-charge Kuber Singh owned up the murder and said he was punished for swindling money from the people by promising them to arrange foreign employment. Police have confirmed that Thapa was shot dead. — HNS
Bandh cripples life
RAUTAHAT: The indefinite Rautahat bandh called by the Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Mahato) and Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum has crippled life here. The bandh, that has been going on from the past ten days, has resulted in shortage of basic utility items like food grain and fuel. — HNS
Student abducted
SIRAHA: An unidentified armed group abducted a student from Phulbariya-3 of Siraha on Sunday evening. Police said Ramesh Kumar Shrestha (20), a permanent resident of Rupnagar of Saptari and currently living in the home of Dharma Binod Upadhyay of Phulbariya-3 as a home servant, was abducted by the gang. Police suspected that the group might have abducted Shrestha after not finding Upadhyay at home. Shrestha was a student of Mohan Higher Secondary School. — HNS
Order to send 4 to jail
SIRAHA: The Siraha District Court on Monday issued an order to send four persons who were accused of being involved in the killing of Nepali Congress leader Bechan Yadav. A single bench of justice Sahadev Prasad Bastola ordered jail for Satrudhan Mandal, Kamaruddin Miya, Jagadis Prasad Shah and Jibachha Miya of Sonamati Majhaura. Yadav was killed after his abduction on November 3. Yadav was also a former chairman of Sonamati Majhaura Village Development Committee. — HNS
Border blockade
KAPILVASTU: A struggle committee of the victims of the in Kapilvastu riots organised a sit-in at the border in Krishnagar of Kapilvastu and announced an indefinite blockade of the border, putting forward 7-point demand. Accusing the government of ignoring the victims of the riots in August, the committee called the strike. It has demanded to declare the persons killed in the riots as martyrs. Member of the committee Birendra Misra said the other demands include arrest and punishment for the guilty, release of innocent Madhesis charged with the riots and immediate declaration of a Madhes state. — HNS
Call to ratify UN treaty
KATHMANDU: The National Network for Safe Migration (NNSM), an alliance of 35 organisations working for migrants, on Monday submitted a 6-point charter of demands to Ramesh Lekhak, Minister of State for Labour and Transport Management, calling on the government to ratify 1990 UN treaty on migrants. The network’s demands include ratification of the treaty and voting rights for migrant workers in constituent assembly polls. It has also demanded for appropriate mechanism to discourage fraudulent cases in the foreign employment sector. Receiving the letter of memorandum, Lekhak told them that the government is planning to bring in new rules and regulations to address their demands. — HNS
