One person was killed and 30 others were injured when a school bus carrying staff members met with an accident at Jogitole in Udaypurgadhi Rural Municipality-7, Udayapur, on Saturday.
According to the District Police Office, Udayapur, the bus (Ba 2 Kha 6438) belonging to Mahottari-based Deep Education English Boarding School was travelling from Mahottari to Sunsari when it veered off the Madan Bhandari Highway and plunged about 12 metres down the road.
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Bimalesh Dutta, who was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
Among the injured, Rasila Kumari Chaudhary, 38, and her 12-year-old son Sandesh Kumar Chaudhary sustained serious injuries and were referred to Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar for further treatment. The remaining injured are undergoing treatment at the District Hospital in Udayapur.
The bus driver, 28-year-old Jeevan Ale of Gaushala Municipality-10, Mahottari, escaped unhurt and has been taken into police custody for investigation, police said.
