Lack of infrastructure and maintenance leaves farmers without vital water supply

SIRAHA, AUGUST 20

More than 200 deep boring irrigation systems in Siraha district have been found non-functional, raising concerns over water access for farmers despite government initiatives.

The government had earlier pledged to install or repair 500 deep borings across Madhes Province to tackle drought, but in Siraha, many remain inoperative due to missing transformers, pipelines, and low local engagement.

According to Narendra Kumar Mahaseth, Chief of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, 32 of 154 borings in Golbazaar Municipality are defunct, along with 17 in Dhangadhimai, 16 in Karjanha, 15 in Siraha Municipality, 24 in Mirchaiya, 21 in Laxmipur Patari, 32 in Naraha, and several more spread across other rural municipalities.

Some of the dysfunctional systems date back nearly three decades.

Farmers have been urging timely repair and infrastructure support to revive these vital irrigation facilities.
