KATHMANDU, MAY 21

More than 270 climbers summited Mount Everest (8,848.86m) in a single day, setting a new record for the highest number of successful ascents in one day, the Expedition Operators Association Nepal (EOAN) said on Wednesday.

The milestone is among several records broken during the Spring 2026 climbing season, which has seen over 500 climbers obtain permits for Everest from the Nepal side - itself a new record.

Kami Rita Sherpa extended his own world record with his 32nd Everest summit, while Lhakpa Sherpa achieved 11 successful ascents on the mountain to set a new women's record. Purnima Shrestha summited for the sixth time, establishing a separate record, and an 18-year-old Australian climber also completed a successful ascent.

EOAN said its rope-fixing team successfully completed the route to the summit on May 13, 2026, after which a steady stream of climbers began reaching the top.

"This is an extremely proud, inspiring and joyous moment for Nepal's mountain tourism sector," EOAN Secretary General Rishi Ram Bhandari said, adding that the achievements had further elevated Nepal's international standing in mountaineering and adventure tourism.

Bhandari credited the results to the dedication, discipline and cooperation of all stakeholders, including climbers, Sherpa guides, support staff and relevant institutions.
