Department of Prison Management continues search after mass jailbreak during protests

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 26

Out of 14,549 inmates who fled 28 prisons and nine correctional facilities across Nepal during the Jail Reform (Jenji) protests on September 9, 8,054 have returned to custody, according to the Department of Prison Management.

Director Chomendra Nyaupane said 7,713 of those who came back had escaped from prisons and 341 from correctional centres. Some surrendered voluntarily while others were captured by security forces.

Authorities are still searching for 6,494 fugitives, including 5,872 who escaped from prisons and 622 from correctional facilities.

Ten inmates have died since the breakout. Nepal's total prison population now stands at 23,446, down from 30,646 before the incident.
