Erratic rainfall and flooding reduce output and cultivated area

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 21

Paddy production in Bhojpur district has declined this year due to irregular rainfall and unseasonal weather, according to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre.

The district produced 36,998 metric tons of paddy this year, down from 37,790 metric tons last year. Similarly, the area under paddy cultivation decreased to 11,500 hectares, compared to 12,154 hectares in the previous year.

The centre said delayed monsoon rains affected timely sowing, while unseasonal rainfall and flooding damaged crops planted on around 78 hectares, either partially or completely.

Paddy is mainly cultivated in the lower belts and valleys of all local levels in the district, with farmers in some fertile valleys growing two paddy crops annually. However, adverse weather conditions disrupted normal production this year, said Information Officer Ghanashyam Baral.
