Standing Committee meeting called off

KATHMANDU, JULY 13

Prime Minister KP Oli is set to deliver his parting speech in the name of the nation and the people on Tuesday afternoon.

He will address the nation at 2:00 pm.

This will be Oli's last speech as the Prime Minister, at least for a while, as the Supreme Court, in an unprecedented verdict in the House dissolution case on Monday, issued an order to appoint opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba as the Prime Minister within 28 hours in line with Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.

With the court's decision, which for obvious reasons did not sit well with most of the ruling party leaders, Oli will be relived of his duties by 5:00 pm today.

Preparations are currently underway to swear-in incoming Prime Minister Deuba at the office of the President.

Meanwhile, the meeting of the ruling CPN-UML's Standing Committee scheduled to be held before the big-speech, has been called off for now.

Oli and his supporters have condemned the SC verdict since the news of the decision became public.

Members of the youth wing even resorted to street protests chanting slogans against the court and stating that the decision will not be accepted, while UML leader Mahesh Basnet even went on to challenge Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana to battle UML in elections from NC's side.
