KATHMANDU, AUGUST 10
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the government is committed to finding a permanent solution to the irrigation problems in the Tarai.
Posting on a social networking site, PM Oli expressed satisfaction over the completion of 76.54 percent of paddy plantation in eight districts of Madhes Province. He reiterated the government's determination to end the region's dependence on rainwater for irrigation from next year.
"I conducted an aerial inspection of drought-affected areas in the Tarai a few days ago. Following this, the government made a special decision to provide relief and support, officially declaring the Tarai-Madhes as a drought-hit zone," he wrote.
According to the Prime Minister, installation work has begun on 500 deep-boring wells as an immediate measure, while the Sunkoshi–Marin diversion project is being advanced as a long-term solution.
He also noted that recent rainfall in the Tarai-Madhes had aided paddy plantation efforts. "A total of 76.54 percent of paddy plantation has been completed in eight districts of Madhes Province. I am hopeful that planting in the remaining areas will be completed within the next few days," he added.
