RANJHA, JUNE 11

The District Disaster Relief Committee, Banke, has decided to implement early preparedness and disaster risk reduction in a bid to reduce the loss incurred from monsoon-induced disasters.

As monsoon has already entered the country and is currently active in Province 1, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, the concerned authority in Banke district has put in place disaster response programmes prior to the occurrence of disasters.

Chief District Officer of Banke Surya Bahadur Khatri shared that the disaster response programme was activated.

It is estimated that around 10,000 people in Banke district would be affected by monsoon-induced disasters while 25,000 people could be affected by other disasters.

"All security agencies and thematic committees have been placed on standby as it is predicted that the monsoon will bring above average rainfall in many parts of the country this year," informed CDO Khatri. A mock rescue operation will be practised in the Rapti River at Kamdi of Daduwa Rural Municipality at 11:00am on June 20.

"Identification of risky zones, safe zones, updating human resources and equipping them well, disaster survey and banning fishing, swimming in the river and preventing firewood and fodder collection in forest areas will be executed to minimise the risk arising from monsoon-induced disasters," he said.
