Province 7 named ‘Far-west’ with Godawari as HQ

Dhangadhi, September 28

The proposal that sought to make Godawari the permanent provincial headquarters of Province 7 and naming the province Far-west was passed in the province’s assembly with the two-thirds majority today.

Discussion on the issue had started from the very next day after the special committee tasked with recommending the names and permanent headquarters of the province submitted its report to the PA on Tuesday. Following two-day discussion, the proposal was put to vote today.

In the 53-strong assembly, 14 Nepali Congress and Rastriya Janata Party lawmakers had boycotted the vote. The remaining PA members had voted in favour of the proposal.

Though NC lawmaker Dilliraj Panta had registered a proposal seeking to make Dhangadi as the permanent provincial headquarters, the proposal wasn’t even discussed after the majority of the lawmakers gave it a thumbs-down.

The provincial government’s Spokesperson Prakash Shah clarified that fixing the name and headquarters was done by using the powers vested in the PA by the constitution. Nepali Congress Rana Bahadur Rawal accused the ruling party of ignoring the voices of dissent. “We’re discussing how to move ahead in the days to come,” he said.
