Referendum to settle major issues: Nepal

Biratnagar, January 15:

CPN-UML leader and chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the Constituent Assembly Madhav Kumar Nepal today said that the issue of “One Madhes One Pradesh” could be settled through a referendum.

Nepal, who has the major responsibility of framing the new constitution, clarified that all the issues on which the political parties had not reached any agreement would be settled through referendum.

Speaking at an interaction organised by the Elite Club, Biratnagar, today, Nepal said, “The issues agreed upon by all the parties would be incorporated in the constitution first, followed by those issues that can be settled through negotiations. Then the issues on which understanding is impossible would be decided through referendum.”

He added that he could not comment anything on the type of federal structure of the nation as he was a part of the Constitutional Committee.

He said that even though the process of framing the new constitution had many challenges, the major challenge was to safeguard nationalism and meeting the needs of the people. Stating that all the parties in the Constituent Assembly were facing towards different directions, he said that all the problems could have easily been solved if the main focus of the parties were people’s welfare, nationalism and framing of the new constitution.

He also denounced the PM’s recent remarks on seizing the state power through revolt.
