KATHMANDU, JUNE 22

The Supreme Court is hearing the writ petitions filed against Prime Minister Oli's decision to reshuffle and expand his cabinet, today.

Both plaintiffs and defendants have been summoned by the the court today for the case proceedings.

The case has been assigned to the bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and Justice Prakash Kumar Dhungana for hearing.

The petitioners had, while filing the writ, demanded that an interim order be issued to the Oli-government citing that a caretaker Prime Minister does not hold the authority to take decisions with lasting impacts such as making changes to the cabinet.

A single bench of Justice Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada had then issued a show cause notice to the government seeking clarification on its decision to reshuffle the cabinet within 15 days, on May 29.

All eyes are on the Supreme Court's verdict on this case as it has in recent days reversed a few of the contested decisions of the incumbent caretaker government. Should the court invalidate PM Oli's act of expanding and reshuffling the cabinet, the newly inducted ministers would not be in a legal position to carry out their duties.
