HETAUDA, JULY 14

A scooter swept away by a flash flood in Simkhola, Indrasarowar Rural Municipality-2 of Makawanpur, has been recovered, while the search for its missing rider continues, police said.

The Bagmati Province-02-032 Pa 8054 scooter was found about 100 metres downstream from the incident site in a pool of the stream on Tuesday morning.

The rider went missing after a sudden flash flood struck Simkhola near the Kulekhani Dam at around 3 pm on Monday, sweeping away both the scooter and its rider.

A joint search operation involving Nepal Police, the Nepal Army and the Armed Police Force was launched immediately after the incident.

Makwanpur Chief District Officer Basanta Adhikari also visited the site, according to District Police Office spokesperson DSP Madhav Kafle.

Police said a blue book bearing the name of Mahesh Karki of Sarlahi was recovered from the scooter's storage compartment. However, the identity and condition of the rider have yet to be confirmed.

Search efforts have been hampered by mud, debris and boulders carried by the flood, although security personnel, assisted by local residents, continue to search the surrounding area, police said.
