Shortage of teachers hits Sunsari schools
Sunsari, November 30
Community schools in Sunsari are in need of 1,300 more teachers.
In accordance with the education policy, a teacher is required for every 50 students. Sunsari has 379 community schools where 195,100 students are studying. As many as 651 teachers, including those hired on relief quota, are working in community schools in the district at present.
According to Education Development and Coordination Unit, the district should have 3,902 teachers in community schools. The number of students could go up if those out of schools are enrolled. In line with the education regulations, the ratio of teachers to students should be increased.
After the country adopted federal structure, the responsibility of managing the education system and making policy related to the education sector has fallen on the shoulders of the local government.
Contradictory provisions in the Federal Education Act and regulations, however, have left the local levels in dilemma.
Chief of Sunsari unit of Education Development and Coordination Govind Prasad Pokhrel said that contradictory provisions of the federal Education Act and regulations had left them confused. “We will move ahead once the central government clears the confusion,” Pokhrel added.
