Speaker defends distribution of funds to parliamentarians

Kathmandu, March 5:

Speaker Subas Nembang said today there is no ground to claim that disbursement of MPs’ Development Fund is illegal.

In a written explanation to the Supreme Court, Speaker Nembang today defended the distribution of one million rupees each to the parliamentarians, claiming that it was just a continuation of practices established in the past and that the disbursement had been done as per the budget for the ongoing fiscal year presented by the finance minister and approved by the parliament.

“Disbursement of funds to MPs is merely a continuation of previous practices and comes in line with a precedent set by the apex court in which it had ordered that disbursement of MPs’ Development Fund can be done only by promulgating an Act,” Nembang said in response to a show cause notice issued by the SC while acting on a Public Interest Litigation filed by advocate Ballav Basnet.

The SC has already ordered the government to stop distributing the money to the parliamentarians until the case is settled.
