Stakeholders ask govt to develop Tamor hydel soon

Phidim, May 6

The Project Concern Committee of reservoir-based Tamor Hydropower Project is planning to pile pressure on the government to start the project’s construction.

Residents of Panchthar, Taplejung, Terhathum and Dhankuta districts have also decided to pile pressure on the government to get the project going as it would contribute to the entire region’s development.

“The project, if constructed, would turn around the fate of locals as it will not only help transform four districts in the region as an industrial corridor, but also link these districts via water transport,” said former parliamentarian Basanta Kumar Nembang, who is also the committee chairperson.

Ne, adding that they were planning to pile pressure at both the local and central levels for construction of the project.

Nembang said various local organisations, including chamber of commerce and industry of four districts, will pile pressure on the concerned local level committees.

Experts have also stated the possibility of operating water transport through the reservoir

As per the proposed model, the project will have a reservoir that will stretch over 40 square kilometre area and a water body eight times larger than Phewa Lake of Pokhara.

Experts have also stated the possibility of operating water transport through the vast reservoir.

According to Energy Minister Janardan Sharma, who had come to inaugurate the Hewa A Hydropower Project in Panchthar’s Phidim a few days ago, the government has completed survey of the project and is on a lookout for investors willing to develop the project.
