ITAHARI: Bechan Meheta, son of Mugalal Mehata, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic) lawmaker, was involved in abduction of a Nepal Telecom (NT) staffer, Sunsari Police disclosed on Monday.

Police claimed that Bechan and 12 others were involved in the abduction of Shekhar Pokharel, an NT technician. A case against Bechan and others has been filed.

According to the police, Bechan, a Ranabir Sena affiliate, had abducted

Pokharel on his way back to Biratnagar on July 17. He was, however, released after a ransom of Rs 1.3 million. Police have detained Santosh Mehata and Budh Mehata in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, Jiyalal Mehata, chief of Nepal Telecom Inaruwa branch, has also been

detained for enquiry, police said.

Rajendra Dhakal, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sunsari, however, said

he had no idea that a lawmaker’s son was involved in the abduction.
