Students for upholding child rights

KATHMANDU: Students of Social Work at St Xavier's College on Saturday revealed that organisations working for the welfare of children do not reach out to the needy children.

Making public the findings of a study conducted among child labourers in Thamel, Ratnapark and Bhaktapur, in a seminar organised by them today, the students said fundamental rights of the children needed to be addressed in the new constitution.

Gauri Pradhan, commissioner, National Human Rights Commission, said people were not aware of the fundamental rights of the children, which had caused the latter to live in a vulnerable condition. Arguing that the new constitution should give the issue a prominent place, Pradhan said existing laws had also been poorly implemented.

Kriti KC, one of the organisers, said their programme was intended to inform people about the children's right to life, protection and education.
