Two, not one, firms for mega power projects
Kathmandu, May 8:
The Ministry for Water Resources today said the government would not let a single company undertake construction works of two hydro-electricity projects.
Earlier, it was speculated that the government would assign GMR Energy Limited to complete 402 MW Arun III and 300 MW Upper Karnali Hydro Electricity Projects, as a high-level committee has recommended the Indian company for both the projects.
“There is little possibility that the government will let one company construct both the big projects simultaneously,” said Anup Upadhyaya, a joint secretary at the ministry today.
Talking to this daily, he also said that letting one company work for two big projects is not practically possible and it would be difficult for any company to handle both the projects simultaneously.
The high-level committee report is now being scanned at the Parliamentary Natural Resources Committee after which it will be sent to the cabinet for final approval, he said. Nepal received nine bids for Arun III and 14 bids for Upper Karnali.
Meanwhile, he also said the number of the parties that showed interest in power generation in Nepal proves that lots of companies are positive to invest in Nepal and that more promoters will be attracted if they are given chance.
