Saptari remains tense on second day of shutdown
RAJBIRAJ: Saptari has remained tense on the second day of general strike called by the the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) to protest Monday's fatal police firing in the district.
Three persons were killed in police action after protesters tried to disrupt CPN-UML's programme near Rajbiraj. One more person succumbed to bullet injuries this morning.
The UDMF had imposed a two-day strike in Tarai districts, while the local leaders of Madhesi parties have called an indefinite banda in the district.
Vehicular movement witnessed a grinding halt and Industries, educational institutes and markets remained closed today as well.
The UDMF cadres have resorted to streets burning tyres. Some incidents of vandalism have also been reported.
Clash in Birgunj
UDMF cadres and local businessmen have clashed at Ghantaghar Chok in Birgunj today, according to the Rastriya Samachara Samiti.
The clash ensued when businessmen retaliated UDMF cadres after the latter beat a local shopkeeper at Mina Bazaar in Birgunj while enforcing their strike, the report said.
Security personnel have been deployed in the area to contain the situation.
