Friends of Nepal supports students in remote Himalayan villages during winter

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 15

A total of 359 students from remote Himalayan settlements in eastern Bajura have received school bags and warm clothes under a joint initiative aimed at supporting children during the winter season.

The distribution was carried out at Shaileshwori Secondary School in Himali Rural Municipality–4, Faiti village, where 236 students received assistance, and at Nepal National Basic School in Borta village, where 123 students were provided with school bags and warm clothing, according to school principal Gopananda Pandey.

The programme was organized by Friends of Nepal in coordination with Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality and with the support of the Citizen Service Government Forum.

Speaking on the occasion, Beni Hyoju, representative of Friends of Nepal, said the organization was established in 2059 BS (2002 AD) in Kathmandu with a focus on education and health, particularly for children in remote and underserved regions.

"We have been working to support children in Nepal's remote areas through education, health camps, and the construction of necessary buildings and health facilities based on local needs," Hyoju said. She added that the organization had also conducted a seven-day health camp in Himali and Swamikartik Khapar rural municipalities two years ago.

Local officials said the support has helped address challenges faced by students who struggled to attend school due to a lack of bags and warm clothing, especially during the winter. Himali Rural Municipality Chairperson Govind Bahadur Malla said many students were visibly happy after receiving the materials, noting that cold weather often disrupts learning in high-altitude areas.

The distribution programme was attended by Chairperson Govind Bahadur Malla, Vice-Chairperson Rajkala Sarki, Chief Administrative Officer Kul Bahadur Thapa, social worker Janesh Bhandari, Friends of Nepal representative Beni Hyoju, along with teachers and students.
