Woman held for defrauding via Facebook paraded

Jhapa, August 26

Jhapa police on Monday made public a woman arrested on the charge of swindling people via Facebook, projecting herself as an air hostess.

Organising a press meet on the premises of Jhapa District Police Office, police paraded Tabita Rai, 27, of Arjundhara Municipality-6. Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahendra Kumar Shrestha at Jhapa DPO said police had nabbed Rai from her home yesterday. According to DSP Shrestha, Rai was nabbed after two persons filed a case against her. She had duped the duo by creating fake Facebook IDs with names, Gurans Shrestha and Garima Shrestha, by projecting herself as an air hostess. The case registered with the police stated that Rai had been talking to the victims for a long time to get close to them. She  then asked money from them citing emergency situations.

Rai was sent to six-day remand by the court. Police have launched an investigation by keeping Rai in custody. Police investigation showed that the woman used to make voice calls on messenger, but did not make video calls fearing that her identity would be revealed. She had obtained photos of air hostesses of Jet Airways and posted it on her fake Facebook accounts.
