A 27-year-old man went missing after jumping into the Lal Bakaiya River from a bridge in Maulapur Municipality-4 of Rautahat on Friday, police said.
The missing individual has been identified as Sachindra Yadav of Kathhariya Tole, Simraungadh Municipality-11 in Bara district.
According to police, Yadav was travelling with his elder brother Sikindra Yadav to Garuda for medical treatment when he suddenly got off the motorcycle on the Lal Bakaiya bridge and jumped into the river.
Preliminary information indicates that the incident occurred at around 1 pm while Yadav was travelling as a pillion rider on motorcycle (Ba 2-06-062 Pa 8548).
Rautahat Police Information Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police Basant Gautam said police received information about the incident at around 2 pm.
A 17-member Nepal Police team led by Inspector Bharat KC and a seven-member Armed Police Force team, including divers, led by Inspector Dil Bahadur Nepali from the APF Security Base in Devahi Gonahi, have been mobilised to search for the missing man.
Police said the river is currently carrying a higher-than-normal water volume due to continuous rainfall, making rescue and search efforts difficult.
According to investigators, Yadav had reportedly been experiencing mental health-related problems, although police said the exact circumstances and reason behind the incident remain under investigation.
Search operations were continuing until the latest reports.
