The water level of the Lal Bakaiya River has risen close to the danger mark following continuous rainfall, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings for riverside and low-lying settlements in Rautahat.
According to a measurement taken at 7:24 am Sunday, the river level at Nijgadh reached 238 cm, exceeding the warning level of 150 cm by 88 cm and remaining only 12 cm below the danger level of 250 cm.
The District Administration Office, Rautahat, has urged residents of Mardyapur in Maulapur Municipality-1 and other vulnerable riverbank communities to remain vigilant as water levels could continue to rise.
Authorities have advised people to avoid riverbanks, bridges, ghats and other flood-prone locations, closely supervise children and elderly family members, and move to safer, elevated locations if necessary.
Security agencies have been kept on 24-hour standby to respond to any flooding, erosion or emergency situations.
Meanwhile, the recently repaired embankment along the Lal Bakaiya River in Mardyapur has come under renewed threat. Officials said more than half of the structure has already been eroded by the swollen river, raising concerns that it could collapse if water levels continue to increase.
