Irresponsible remarks

It was highly irresponsible of the home minister to say that the CA polls will take place even amid gunfire and bombing.

People cannot risk their lives for the sake of an election that might in the end have little legitimacy if the current level of violence and criminal activities around the country continues.

How can the most important election in the country’s history be held without wide public and

political participation? What level of legitimacy will the CA thus convened enjoy?

Bitter cold

Aren’t we supposed to be getting to the end of the winter season? Why this unseasonable plummeting of temperature, then? Even swaddled in bundles of blankets, I cannot warm my feet at night and a coughing fit has laid hold of me.

I thought the world was fast heating up — what with the constant buzz about climate change and global warming! I cannot wait for the sunny days to return to the Valley that I can put aside layers of clothes and can once again lay my hands on, what else, ice cream!

This refers to the news report “Jail for 17 with palliative for contempt” (THT, Jan. 28). The Supreme Court has done the right thing by sentencing those chanting slogans against the judges and the judiciary inside Supreme Court premises on Jan 17.

It is surprising though that the SC judges came up with the verdict so soon. Nepali judiciary, known for its snail-paced dispensation of justice, should show equal readiness to decide

hundreds of cases pending with the apex court as well as the lower courts, for justice delayed is justice denied.

Why not?

Even as the country has been facing an acute shortage of medical doctors, the government’s decision to not allow students pursuing their MBBS in China to complete their internships in government hospitals is injudicious, “Parents on stir for would-be docs’ cause” (THT, Jan. 28).

It is not only practical for students to undertake internship at home as it helps them get better

acquainted with the types of medical cases in Nepal.

Besides, they can also make up for the shortage of doctors in the country. Hence this government decision will not only adversely affect the career of thousands of students, but prove to be a huge loss for the country as well.

Unjust

A journalist in Jhapa was thrashed by some livestock owners for disseminating news about the possible threat of bird flu, a pandemic that has spread in a bordering Indian state. The attack on a scribe for doing his duty of informing the public about the perils

of the deadly disease cannot be termed as anything else but a blatant assault on press freedom.

The livestock owners should understand that if the public is not informed about bird flu

and measures to keep it at bay, it could lead to a huge loss of lives of humans and poultry.
