Traffic woes

These days the traffic chaos and jams have become acute problems people are facing everyday in the capital city. Rapid population growth, urban sprawl, and the rising increase in the number of vehicles are creating traffic congestion which is much of an inconvenience while commuting.

People have to suffer traffic snarls every day. During the office hour and VIP convoys, the jam gets increasingly more intense. Some even have to miss out their important interviews, exams and other important works. There are many incidents where people lose their lives as they were unable to reach hospitals on time due to the ever growing traffic congestion.

There are traffic rules but they aren’t implemented effectively by those concerned. Drivers of public vehicles stop the vehicles wherever they like to pick up more passengers. And not only drivers are in a hurry but some passengers too request or compel the drivers to stop the vehicles to get down near to their destination. There are rules but who cares?  Rules aren’t implemented effectively here and that is a major problem.

The number of motorbikes has increased rapidly in Kathmandu city of late. They are always in a rush. So, they drive the motorbikes in a haphazard manner. Sometimes they are seen riding in the pedestrian lanes too which can be very dangerous. They are also one of the major causes of traffic congestion in the city. People are also reasons for the troublesome traffic congestion. Despite having flyovers and zebra crossings, many pedestrians  cross the road riskily from wherever they like. Even  educated people cross the road from wherever they want to. Despite the compulsion of using zebra crossings pedestrians usually do not do so. Moreover, the motorists and drivers speed up when they come near them posing additional threats to people using the roads, for  people are found rarely using the zebra crossing.

Sometimes, VIP convoys are the main cause of traffic congestion. Can’t the VIPs alert the common people about the timing of their convoy earlier so that people can leave home to reach their workplace on time. Our leaders use excessive security and vehicles when they travel. Why do they fear the people? While asking for votes, leaders go to the people without any fear, and when they are in power, they use tight security and vehicles with sirens barging through the traffic.
