KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 5

Seen in the pictures are tens of thousands of people who arrived from various parts of the county to take part in a mass gathering, organised by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's supporters, in response to the recent protests held by the other splinter group of Nepal Communist Party (NCP), in Kathmandu, on Friday.

The dissenting faction led by former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal have been demonstrating against PM Oli after he dissolved the House of Representatives.

On December 20, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced the HoR dissolution, which was swiftly approved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari while also announcing mid-term elections in April-May 2021. The decision, which is also being regarded by many sides as an 'autocratic' move on the part of the Prime Minister, has caused much chaos nationwide and led to political instability following a formal split of the ruling NCP into two factions.

Today's mass assembly led by PM Oli also came through as an attempt on his part to convince the public of his agendas including taking a fresh people's mandate, among other things. Contrary to speculations regarding some 'surprise' announcement at the mass, Prime Minister Oli repeated his earlier statements in way of attacking his opposition.
