Seventeen-year-old Ektaa Shah, a recent Sainik School graduate, lies in a hospital bed at KMC Hospital in Sinamangal, Kathmandu, Nepal, on Monday, September 29, 2025, after being shot outside the federal parliament on September 8. A rubber bullet hit her hand, and a live round struck her leg, leaving a plate in her bone. For 21 days, her parents have cared for her, and Dashain will be spent in the hospital.
Despite her injuries, Ektaa continues studying on her laptop, preparing for medical studies. “We fought for change, and if the new prime minister and leaders came to visit us, it would mean everything,” she says with a hopeful smile. Her mother, Bunu Shahi, calls her “our one and only daughter, a very talented student,” and worries about her future after the trauma of two bullets.

His family from Bajura faces financial hardship, with his father also hospitalized for a heart condition. “Every year we went home for Dashain, but this time I cannot walk properly—it’s a very sad Dashain for me,” he says. Despite some personal support, his recovery and future remain uncertain.
