KATHMANDU, MAY 6
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has convened 37 early- and mid-career climate scientists from 27 developing countries for a three-day climate training workshop in Trieste, Italy.
The workshop, taking place from May 5 to 7 at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), brings together participants and eight leading experts, including scientists affiliated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The programme aims to strengthen scientific capacity in regions most vulnerable to climate change and enhance representation of experts from the global South in international climate assessments. Participants are receiving hands-on training on climate science, adaptation strategies, policy engagement and science–policy coordination.
TWAS President Quarraisha Abdool Karim said the initiative seeks to build a stronger and more interconnected scientific community capable of contributing to global climate processes, particularly the IPCC.
The workshop also includes 11 PhD scholars supported by the TWAS–Sida Climate Research Programme, aimed at building research capacity in least developed countries. The event is supported by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
