15th Asian Games DOHA 2006: Chess players earn points

Doha, December 2:

Bilam Lal Shrestha and Surbir Lama gave something to cheer after winning their Rapid Chess second round matches at the 15th Asian Games today.

Shrestha defeated Talib Moosa Ibrahim of UAE to earn the first point. He had lost to grand master Alekxei Barsov 1-0 in the first round. Lama, who went down to Susanto Megranto of Indonesia in the first round, defeated Jwan Bakr in the second round.

In women’s side, Mona Lisa Khamboo earned a point after having a bye in the second round. Khamboo was beaten 0-1 by Olga Sabirova of Uzbekistan in the first round.

Boxer Sushil Ghimire earned a bye in the first round and will face Wakadopola Wasala of Sri Lanka in the second round of the 64kg section on December 5.

Soft tennis also gave a soothing result. After losing in men’s team group stages against Japan and Taipei, Nepali pair of Abhisek Aman Jha and Raju Patuwar won when Philippines’ pair retired hurt. The Nepali pair had won the first doubles match 5-3 and Krishna Bahadur Raut lost the singles match 0-4 to Michael John Enriquez.

Earlier, Abhishek and Raju lost to Japan’s Naoya Hanada and Tatsuro Kawamura 0-5 in doubles. In singles against Taipei, Raut lost to Hidenori Shinohara 0-4 and Shyam Lama and Dipendra Thapa were beaten by Shigeo Nakahori and Tsuneo Takagawa 0-5 in the doubles match against Japan.

In the men’s team group stage match against Taipei, Abhishek and Raju lost 0-5 while Krishna Bahadur Raut was beaten 2-4, 1-4, 0-4, 2-4 in singles. Dipendra and Shyam Kumar lost 4-0, 4-1, 6-4, 4-0, 4-0 in the second doubles match against Taipei.

Shooter Ashim Yadav is out of the contention after finishing 45th in the 10m air rifle. Yadav started with 91 points and went on to score 95, 91, 94, 97 and 96 in six games for a total of 564 points. In women’s 10m Air Rifle, Bhagwati Khatri finished 42nd with 382 points while Phool Maya Kyapchhaki (380) came 45th and Asmita Rai finished 53rd with 375 in the 54-women field.
