15TH ASIAN GAMES DOHA 2006: Nepali golfers unimpressive in Doha

Doha, December 11:

Nepal’s Shivaram Shrestha finished 45th in the men’s individual golf tournament here today. The top finisher among the four Nepalis, Shrestha carded six over 78 in the final round. Shrestha finished with 18 over 306 in four rounds. He had six over in the first round, five over in the second and one over in the third round.

Yelamber Adhikari came 49th with 21 over 309 while CB Bhandari finished 64th with 41 over 329 and Tashi Ghale 66th with 51 over 339 in the 72-men field.

Korea bagged both the Individual and team event gold medals. Kyung Tae carded 12 under 276 for the gold while Chen Tsung Pan of Taipei (11 under 277) and Michael Eric Bibat of Philippines (nine under 279) won silver and bronze medals respectively.

In team event, Nepal came 15th with 943 points. Korean team scored 836 to win the gold while India claimed silver with the score of 849. Taipei bagged the bronze.

In the classical mixed team chess, Nepali team of Monalisa Khamboo, Bilam Lal Shrestha and Surbir Lama have scored 5.5 points until Sunday. Khamboo has been so far the most successful with two wins. Nepal opened its account with two points against Palestine on Friday when Khamboo beat Shadia Jaradat and Shrestha and Lama held their opponents.

Nepal had a bye in the fourth round, meaning they got 1.5 points. Playing against Macau, Nepal added two more points. Khamboo registered her second win when she beat I Sin Chan while Shrestha drew with Rodolfo Abelgas and Lama held Tong Kuan Mak.

In Wushu, three Taulo performers — Bhuvan Shrestha, Bikash Gurung and Gautam Dangol — finished at the bottom. Shrestha earned the lowest 8.12 points in the Qiangshu (spear). Lingjuan MA of China and Susyana Tjhan of Indonesia lead with 9.86 and 9.38 points respectively. The other two events in the Women’s Changquan are slated for December 12 and December 14.

In the men’s Changquan (Long-fist), Bikash Gurung scored 7.10 points and lie at 17th position. Xiaochao Yuan of China (9.80) and Rui Jia of Macau (9.70) lead the chart. The other two events in this category are slated for December 12 and December 14.

In the men’s Nanquan (Southern-fist), Gautam Dangol scored the lowest of all the performers. He remained 18th at 7.20. Caibao Wu of China and Quoc Khanh Pham of Vietnam lead with 9.82 and 9.74.

In the Men’s 52kg Sanshou (combat), despite winning the first round 5-0, Raj Kumar Rasiali lost against the 2003 World Championships bronze medallist Chi Meng Chao of Macau 2-1. Rasaili lost the second round 0-5 and third round 1-4.

In the men’s 60kg Sanshou preliminary bout, Satya Man Lama was knocked out by Rustam Magdiev of Uzbekistan in the first round. The remaining two events will be played on December 12 and December 14.

Coach Pranil Dhoj Karki blamed the National Sports Council for not allowing him to undergo coaches’ training. “They (NSC) did not send me to the training and I missed new techniques,” said Karki. “Only today I came know the new techniques,” he added.

What an error!

DOHA: Nepali middle distance runner Kanchhi Maya Koju did not start the 5000m here today. Her name, however, was included in the list of 10 athletes. National Sports Council member Laxman Shrestha said she was not scheduled to participate in the event. “I don’t know

how her name appeared for the event,” he said. Koju ran in the 10,000m finishing seventh with the timings of 37:59.76 on Friday. — HNS
