ACAPULCO: Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela advanced to the Abierto Mexicano final on Friday when compatriot Agustin Calleri retired after pulling a leg muscle. Chela led 6-4, 5-5 when the second-seeded Calleri stopped playing.
The fourth-seeded Chela will face eighth-seeded Carlos Moya, a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 winner over top-seeded Spanish countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Moya won the 2002 and 2004 titles.
In the women’s semi-finals, fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta, the Italian who won the 2005 tournament, defeated compatriot Sara Errani 6-2, 6-4, and France’s Emilie Loit beat Germany’s Julie Schruff 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
