KATHMANDU, AUGUST 17

Badminton Asia and Nepal Badminton Association are organising the Badminton Asia (South Asia) Regional Championship at the Nepal APF Club covered hall from Friday.

A total of 52 shuttlers from six South Asian countries - including 16 from Nepal - are taking part in the fiveday championship which features 12 events - singles, doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team - in u-15 and u-17 age groups, informed Badminton Asia Events Manager NG Yein Mun at a press meet today. "The championship is under the Development Project of Badminton Asia and we are organising tournaments in four regions," Mun added.

NBA President Ramji Bahadur Shrestha thanked the Badminton Asia for choosing Nepal as the hosts. "We are grateful to World Badminton and Badminton Asia for the opportunity. The event is a great platform for our junior players," he said.

Senior Development Manager of Badminton Asia Thanabalan Arikrishnan informed about the four different events scheduled on the sidelines of the championship - South Asia Leaders Development Meeting, Women in Badminton Workshop, South Asia Regional Umpire Course and South Asia Junior Training Camp.

"We have been organising various programmes across Asia and these are important aspects for overall development of the sport," he said.

Another Senior Development Manager of Badminton Asia Shambenthan Sivaperumal informed a total of 24 players would be selected for Asia Olympic Project after the completion of the four regional tournaments. "We will pick one each boy and girl from all six participating nations and train them in Malaysia for future prospects," he said.
