Bagmati Province fencers bagged two gold medals today in the Ninth National Games but the organisers ruined the players' party as there was no medals for them to celebrate.
Bagmati took the gold medal count to four and are at the top of the table. On Wednesday, Bagmati won foil team event beating Tribhuvan Army Club 45-35 at the Pokhara Stadium covered hall. Sudurpashchim and Province-I bagged bronze medals. Bagmati women's team claimed their fourth gold of the Games with a 45-35 victory over TAC. Nepal APF Club and Province-I finished joint third in the event. After losing two finals, TAC finally bagged the women's epee team event gold medal. TAC defeated fellow departmental side APF 45-40 in final.
Province-I and Sudurpashchim came joint third in the event.
The winners of the epee team event got the medals but only after the organisers took them back from other players. Minister for Youth and Sports Maheshwor Jung Gahatraj was scheduled to hand over the prizes to the winners but the organisers did not have the medals ready for the players.
And the Nepal Fencing Association officials collected medals from other players to conduct the presentation ceremony.
Cricket
Nepal Police Club registered their second victory in women's cricket. NPC, who are playing their first domestic tournament, thrashed Province-I by 118 runs to stay at the top of Group B with four points.
Batting first, NPC posted 158-3 in their allotted 20 overs riding on half century from Samjhana Khadka, and restricted Province-I for 40-8. Player of the match Samjhana Khadka scored a quick fire 60 off just 43 balls that included three fours and a six. Khadka, who reached 50 off 39 balls, scored the first half century of the tournament. Kabita Kunwar scored 37 off 38 balls with the help of three boundaries and a six. Khadka and Kunwar added 77 runs for the second wicket, while Khadka and Apsari Begam shared a 42-run partnership for third wicket.
Begam hit two fours in her 21-ball 20. NPC skipper Rubina Chhetry remained unbeaten on 14-ball 16 that included two fours.
In reply, Province-I skipper Sanu Rajbanshi and Lakita Rajbanshi scored 11 runs each, while other batters failed to reach double figure mark. Hiranmayee Roy was the pick of the NPC bowlers taking 3-5 from three overs, while Sabnam Rai, Kabita Kunwar and Kabita Joshi grabbed one wicket each.
In another match, Lumbini outplayed Karnali by 104 runs to record their first victory.
Batting first, Lumbini posted 127-6 in 20 overs before packing Karnali for a paltry 23 runs in 8.3 overs.
Laxmi Chaudhary top scored for Lumbini with 31 runs, while Saraswoti Gharti Magar contributed 20. Susmita Bajgai and Ashma Pulami Magar scored 12 runs each. Anju Gurung took two wickets for Karnali and Anjila Chhetry grabbed one.
In reply, none of the Karnali batters could score in double figure. Kiran Kunwar was the top scorer with five runs. Player of the match Madhu DC took four wickets for Lumbini, while Kritika Marasini grabbed two and Susmita Bhusal claimed one wicket.
