Departmental sides Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal APF Club won gold medals in fencing team events under the Ninth National Games here today.
TAC defeated Bagmati 45-24 in the men's sabre team event for their fourth gold medal of the Games, while APF and Gandaki Province came joint third. APF bagged their second gold medal following their 45-36 victory over Bagmati in the women's foil team event. TAC and Gandaki finished joint third.
General Secretary of Nepal Olympic Committee Nilendra Raj Shrestha handed over the prizes to the winners. The men's epee team event, which was postponed due to technical reason, will be held on Friday, informed referee Anup Kapali.
Handball
Gandaki, TAC, APF and Lumbini Province advanced to the men's handball semi-finals.
Gandaki finished as Group A winners on better goal difference after they were tied on points with TAC, while APF and Lumbini finished as top two teams respectively in Group B. In women's section, APF and Gandaki made it to the semi-finals as Group A winners and runners-up, while TAC won the Group B ahead of Province-I.
In the last league round match, Gandaki and TAC shared points after they played a 27-27 draw.
Dinesh Shrestha, Prem Bahadur Gurung and Basu Gurung of Gandaki netted six goals each, while Yam Bahadur Pun Magar and Nirmal Babu Shrestha also scored six goals apiece for TAC.
Also, Karnali hammered Madhesh Province 41-15 riding on 13 goals from Keshav Bista, whereas Suresh Ale Magar netted 11 goals as APF defeated Sudurpashchim Province 35-19.
In women' section, Karnali defeated Bagmati 5-2 riding on four goals from Sangita Singh, while Prekshya Katuwal netted eight goals as Province-I recorded a 19-4 victory over Madhesh Province.
Also, Gandaki outplayed Lumbini 35-9 in which Akriti Gurung of Gandaki top scored with seven goals.
Cricket
Nepal APF Club and Madhesh Province registered victories in women's cricket. APF defeated Gandaki Province by nine wickets.
Batting first, Gandaki were bowled out for a paltry 26 runs in 18.2 overs before APF reached the target losing a wicket wit 106 balls to spare. Skipper Sita Rana Magar hit two fours in her fiveball 12, while Indu Barma scored three-ball nine with the help of two boundaries.
None of the Gandaki batters could score in double figures with Shristi Jaishi being the top scorer with five runs. Indu Barma took two wickets for APF, while Suman Bista, Nary Thapa, Nisha Bhatta and Sita Rana Magar grabbed one wicket each.
In another match, Madhesh Province beat Sudurpashchim Province by 15 runs. Batting first Madhesh posted 91-9 in their allotted 20 overs before restricting Sudurpashchim for 76-8. Player of the match Sana Prabin top scored for Madhesh with 49-ball 35 that included three fours, while Goma Ale contributed 10.
Sabitri Dhami took four wickets.
Ritu Kanoujiya scored 27 for Sudurpashchim, while Ruby Poddar (12) and Yashoda Bista (11) contributed in double figures.
Santoshi Chaudhary, Shanti Chaudhary and Anuradha Chaudhary grabbed two wickets each for Madhesh.
Football
Bagmati Province and NRNA Sports Academy recorded victories in the inaugural day matches of men's football at the Gosteghat grounds in Yamdi. NRNA beat Province-I, while Bagmati defeated Madhesh Province by identical scores of 2-0. Sanjok Rai and Bimal Gharti Magar scored one goal each for NRNA, while Sunil Bal and Anjan Bista netted one goal apiece for Province-I.
In women's football played at the Malebagar grounds in Waling, Syangja, Nepal Police Club thrashed Bagmati Province 5-0 riding on hat-trick from Rekha Poudel and a brace from Niru Thapa. In another match, TAC hammered Madhesh Province 6-0. Indira Rai scored a brace, Chandra Bhandari, Kusma Khatiwada, Amisa Karki and Hima Chaudhary netted one goal each for TAC.
Hockey
TAC made winning start in men's hockey at the Gauri Shankar grounds in Hemja. TAC defeated Gandaki 4-0 in the opening match. Rajendra Karki scored a brace, while Pradeep Rajbanshi and Roman Rana added one goal each for the departmental side.
Volleyball
Gandaki Province defeated Sudurpashchim Province in straight sets in women's volleyball in Beni, Myagdi. Gandaki - led by women's national team skipper Aruna Shahi - registered a 25-18, 2508, 25-22 victory over Sudurpashchim in the inaugural match. A total of 10 teams are taking part in the tournament.
The organisers also held a rally around Beni before the match. Myagdi District Sports Development Committee Chief Raj Kumar Thapa inaugurated the tournament.
